Chipping Norton Lido
Charity-run outdoor heated lido in Chipping Norton with a 25-metre main pool and a toddlers' paddling pool, open seasonally since 2004.
Chipping Norton Lido sits on Fox Close in the heart of the town, a community-owned outdoor pool that has been run as a charity since 2004. It is one of a handful of outdoor lidos that survived the closures of the 1980s and 1990s through local determination and community fundraising, and it has the atmosphere of a place that is genuinely valued by the people who use it.
The main pool is a heated 25-metre outdoor pool, suitable for lane swimming and general family swims alike. A separate toddlers' paddling pool means even the youngest visitors have somewhere safe, shallow and easy to enjoy. The surrounding grass and deck areas fill up quickly on warm days, so arriving early or pre-booking a session is worth doing.
The lido runs on a seasonal basis, broadly from spring through to the end of summer, and sessions can sell out on hot weekends. Booking online in advance is the most reliable way to guarantee entry. The phone line is available for those who prefer to call ahead.
For families based in or visiting north Oxfordshire, it is an easy summer day out. The town itself is good for a wander before or after a swim, with independent shops and cafes on the market square a short walk away.
Good for: water, sporty, outdoors. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
