The free-ranging cattle in early summer are the thing children remember most; they are closer and calmer than you would expect. Use the free roadside parking, bring a picnic and give everyone room to run.

Minchinhampton Common is a vast open stretch of limestone grassland sitting high on the Cotswold plateau above Stroud, managed by the National Trust as common land that has been grazed and walked for centuries. The 580 acres give a sense of real space and freedom, and on a clear day the views reach across the Severn Vale to the Forest of Dean and the distant Welsh hills. Children take to the open turf immediately, running, rolling and flying kites without the worry of roads or fences.

From May to October a herd of cattle grazes freely on the common, which is a genuine draw for children who have only seen cows in fields. They roam unhurried and can be watched at close quarters from the paths. The National Trust marks the annual Marking Day when the cattle come out each spring with family activities, spotting sheets and wildlife events. In summer the unimproved grassland is full of wildflowers and the butterflies that depend on them.

The common also holds The Bulwarks, a scheduled ancient monument formed by Iron Age defensive earthworks that cross the plateau in an arc. There are no facilities on the common itself, so bring a picnic. The small town of Minchinhampton, with a cafe, pubs and a traditional market square, is a short walk from the western edge. It is a proper, free, open-air day and suits everyone from toddlers upwards.

Good for: outdoors, animals, sensory, history. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
