Aim for a morning in clear weather and walk the full hillfort perimeter for the best views across the Vale. The Giant's Steps in the Manger are irresistible to children, so leave time for them to run up and down.

The White Horse at Uffington is one of the oldest chalk-cut hill figures in Britain, a stylised running horse around 110 metres long that has been maintained on the same hillside above the Vale of White Horse for three thousand years or more. The site is managed jointly by the National Trust and English Heritage. A short walk from the car park brings you up to the flat hilltop, where the earthworks of Uffington Castle, an Iron Age hillfort, encircle the summit and give wide views across the Vale on a clear day.

Just below the horse is Dragon Hill, a flat-topped natural mound with its own ancient legend, and below that the Manger, a dramatic dry valley with steep rippled sides shaped by retreating permafrost. Children quickly discover that the ripples, known as the Giant's Steps, are good for charging down. The site is unfenced and open at all times, so families can explore the hillfort, walk the ramparts and wander the ridgeline at their own pace.

There are no facilities at the site itself: no toilets, no cafe and no visitor centre beyond information boards. Bring a picnic and water, dress in layers for the exposed hilltop, and allow around an hour for a good circuit of the horse, hillfort and Dragon Hill. The National Trust car park sits below the horse; a small fee applies for non-members.

Good for: outdoors, history, sensory. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
