The Sculpture Trail turns a forest walk into a treasure hunt, the children raced ahead to find the next one. Entry is free, just budget for parking, and bring a picnic for the lawns.

Beechenhurst is the main visitor hub of the Forest of Dean, a free-to-enter site near Coleford that is the starting point for some of the area's best family walks. Entry is free though parking is charged, and from the open central area trails of varying length head out into the woods. The famous Sculpture Trail loops through the forest past large artworks hidden among the trees, which turns a walk into a treasure hunt for children.

There is a big adventure play area, plenty of open grass for running and picnics, barbecue spots and a cafe, so families can easily spend a relaxed half day or more. Cycling, including hire and family-friendly routes, is popular from here too, and the forest setting is lovely in every season. It is an easygoing, outdoorsy day rather than a built attraction.

It suits all ages, with the youngest happy in the playground and on the gentle trails and older children enjoying the sculpture hunt and cycling. Bring a picnic and stout shoes.

Good for: outdoors, sporty, sensory. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
