The in-situ mosaics are the main draw and they are genuinely impressive, laid in the ground exactly where the Romans left them. Aim for a free Monday guided tour if you can, as the context brings the ruins to life.
Chedworth Roman Villa is one of the best-preserved Roman villas in Britain, set at the end of a wooded Cotswold valley and cared for by the National Trust. The remains of this grand fourth-century country house include some of the country's finest in-situ Roman floor mosaics, two sets of bath-houses, a hypocaust underfloor heating system and a water shrine, all connected by a woodland walk with interpretation at each point.
The learning pavilion provides shelter and context, and there are seasonal family activities including Roman board games, mosaic puzzles, Roman-numeral challenges and magnetic mosaic building. Families can also borrow Roman outfits to wear around the site at selected times, and free guided tours run on Mondays from March to October for those who want more of the story behind what they are looking at.
For families the visit works best in spring and summer when the full programme of activities runs. The terrain is uneven with slopes and boardwalks, so sturdy shoes are important and very young children may need carrying in places. Allow a couple of hours and bring a picnic to make the most of the outdoor setting.
