The adventure playground bought us a peaceful wander round the gardens, which are stunning. The royal history is a real bonus, even the children were impressed a queen is buried here.

Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe is a thousand-year-old castle with genuine royal history, the only private castle in England to have a queen buried in its grounds, Katherine Parr, the last wife of Henry VIII. Families come for the mix of history and outdoors, exploring the ruins, the chapel and the richly planted gardens that wrap around the castle.

For children there is a large adventure playground and a pheasantry with colourful birds, plus seasonal family trails, knights and dressing-up at busier times. The award-winning gardens are a pleasure to wander, with hidden corners and a long walk past the ruins. It blends a proper historic visit with enough outdoor play to keep younger children happy, which not every castle manages.

It suits toddlers up to older children, with the youngest enjoying the playground and birds and older ones the history and gardens. Allow a relaxed half day and combine it with the steam railway nearby.

Good for: history, outdoors, fairytale. Ages: 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
