✦ We visited
A short but genuinely lovely seasonal visit. The lavender fields look and smell spectacular on a warm day, and the children's trail through the beechwood holds younger visitors' attention well beyond what you might expect.

Cotswold Lavender occupies Hill Barn Farm above the village of Snowshill, looking out across a wide sweep of the Cotswold escarpment towards Worcestershire. For a few weeks each summer the hillside turns purple as dozens of varieties of lavender come into bloom, and the farm opens its gates to visitors who want to walk among the rows and take in the scent.

For families, the beechwood children's nature trail is the main draw alongside the fields themselves. The trail winds through a small wood, with stepping stones, a wooden tipi and nature activity sheets that give children something to focus on as they explore. Younger children find the sensory experience of the lavender fields — the colour, the smell, the bees working through the rows — absorbing in its own right.

For a week or two in mid-July the farm runs the lavender stills, and visitors can watch the distillation process and see how lavender oil is extracted. The farmshop sells lavender products alongside refreshments. The season is short — typically mid-June to early August — so it is worth checking the website before you plan a visit. The surrounding countryside, including the nearby village of Snowshill and the market town of Broadway, makes the trip easy to extend into a longer day.

Good for: outdoors, sensory, arts. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
